Aspatria Hornets rugby league side have joined the fight to save the town’s only care home. The county council is consulting on plans to close Park Lodge as part of proposals to improve care services.
The rugby league team invited Phill Roberts and Iris Stobbart, of the Save Park Lodge campaign, to their training session on Monday to pledge their support.
Craig Hamilton, 30, of Lawson Street, a player and former town councillor, said: “There is not a lot left in Aspatria, everything seems to be getting shut down and it is important to keep what we have got.
“Some of the residents have been there a long time and shouldn’t have to move at that time in their lives.”
Young people from the town’s Dreamscheme youth group also attended to show their support.
Mr Roberts said that community support was growing for the campaign.
He added: “The county council have wasted thousands of pounds on a discredited consultation process that many people recognise as biased towards closure of three residential care homes.
“We need to have an open, transparent and fair debate about how, when and where we look after our elderly, but we are not able to have this debate when their residential care homes are facing the threat of closure.”
The campaign group has invited county councillors to visit the home before making their decision.
The group will hold a fund-raising event at Aspatria rugby club next Friday.
The consultation closes on February 15 and a decision is expected this spring.
