Twenty elderly residents and four members of staff were evacuated from a care home this afternoon after a fire broke out in the laundry room.
One resident and one member of staff had to be rescued by firefighters from the first floor.
London Fire and Rescue were called to Elmglade Nursing home in London Road, Sutton, at 3.52pm yesterday afternoon after reports of a fire.
Four fire engines and 20 fire fighters arrived on the scene and tackled what was described as a ‘small’ fire which took less than an hour to get under control.
An ambulance was called and one resident treated for a cut to the leg.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.
